What can I find in the children's room?

The San Rafael Public Library has one of the largest collections of children's materials in Marin county. Within our collection you can find:

  • English, Spanish and bilingual materials

  • Board books for babies

  • Picture books and an extensive collection of folk and fairy tales

  • Early Reader books for beginning readers

  • Chapter books and novels for independent readers through eighth grade

  • Audio-visual materials such as DVDs, audiobooks on CD, music, and computers with games and Internet access. For more about our computers, please read the Children's Internet Policy.

  • Encylopedias, magazines, and other reference materials

  • Non-fiction titles on every subject for school assignments and curiosity

  • Librarians who are happy to answer your questions and help you find the materials you are looking for!

What do I need to use the library?

To check out materials from the library, including print and digital materials, and to access our other digital resources, you need a library card. Drop by the library with a picture ID and proof of residence to create a library card. To get a card for your child, all that is required is a parent or guardian's signature.

You can gain immediate access to our online materials and resources by signing up for an card online.

How long can I keep the items I have checked out?

Depending on the type of item, check out periods vary. Children's books check out for three weeks, and Children's DVDs for one week. For information on more items in the library, please take a look at our loans and limits.

I want to bring my child to storytimes. What do I need to know?
