Children's Room Internet Policy

The San Rafael Public Library encourages lifelong learning, promotes literacy, and provides access to library materials and information for all. As with our print collection, we have thoughtfully selected our digital materials to best support those goals.

In order to meet a wide variety of information needs, the Library makes information available in a variety of formats and provides access to the information resources of the Internet.

Purpose: Primarily, computers are for information, research, and the support of intellectual and creative growth, both academic and personal.

Privacy: Please respect the privacy rights of others. Please do not stare at another patron’s screen, intimidate, or otherwise interfere with another patron’s Internet session.

Security: In order to keep our computers secure, access to the hard drive has been disabled. If you wish to save files, you will need to use your own storage device, or a librarian can show you how to store documents online.

Access: The Web constantly changes. Thus, there are many reasons why you may not be able to access a particular Website, or otherwise experience difficulty navigating the Web. We will do our best to help you, with the understanding that staff cannot control how sites on the Web function.

Please don’t:

  • Display harmful or obscene information and images inappropriate for a public and open environment.

  • Use the library's Internet access for any illegal purpose.

  • Vandalize library property, including the library's network security, or attempt to harm or destroy data of another user, or data on other networks connected to the Internet.

  • Violate copyright laws or licensing agreements.

To use the Children’s Internet computers, you must:

  • Be 14 years of age or younger and have a valid library card.

  • Make a reservation by signing up at the Children’s reference desk. Your time will be held for 5 minutes and then you will lose your turn.

  • Let someone else have a turn after your 30 minute session. You can have a second 30 minute session if no one else is waiting to use the computer. Each person can use the computer for a maximum of one hour per day. The Library clock is the official clock.

Remember:

  • Pay for your printouts at the Children’s desk. They cost 10 cents per sheet. A librarian can show you where the printer is and how to use it.

  • The Children’s computers are shut down 15 minutes before closing, and give yourself plenty of time to finish what you’re doing by that time.

  • Groups of two people may use a computer together, but the time counts for both people. No more than 2 people may use a computer station at one time. Exceptions may be made for families. If you move a chair, please remember to return it when you are finished.

Misuse of the Internet or any violation of policies may result in the withdrawal or suspension of access privileges.
