5 Ways the Library Can Make You Awesomer

You know, libraries can actually be pretty awesome and can save you *a lot of* money. Here are some nifty ways you can save money by using the library instead of buying stuff yourself:

1. Get free trips to museums

San Rafael Public Library, along with all the other libraries in Marin, are offering free and discounted museum and zoo passes through the Discover & Go service. Just log in with your library card and print out passes at home!

2. Get free audio books (on CD or digital downloads)

We have a ton of audio books on CD and an equal ton of digital audiobooks. For those, just log in with your library card, find the book you want, download the file, listen to it, and then in three weeks the file will self destruct. Our books on CD, however, do not self-destruct (sorry to disappoint).

3. Borrow movies on DVD or BluRay

Forget Red Box! You know all of those DVDs and BluRay movies and TV shows you can’t get on Netflix (or anywhere else) streaming? Libraries have had movies right alongside our books for decades. That hasn’t changed…and you can get an entertaining stack of movies for the weekend that won’t cost you a penny.

4. Research your family tree for free

There are many genealogy websites out there and they cost quite a bit to use. Our library subscribes to the most popular of these sites, Ancestry.com, and you can use it for free at the library. It can be fun to see where your family came from and what their histories look like. It takes moments to start searching and our expert research librarians can help you get started!

5. The internet: we’ve got that

While a lot of people have internet at home, or on their mobile devices, there are still plenty of people in San Rafael who don’t have internet access at all. If you need to apply for jobs, check email, or communicate with family and friends then we’ve got you covered! We have computer labs at both of our libraries as well as wifi hotspots – all free! You can also print, copy, and scan whatever you need to.

If you haven’t tried out the library in a while, come say hi – either physically or virtually!
