Find the perfect book for you with our online booklists!

Posted by jillt on

Ask anyone: our Children’s Room is home to a LOT of books. Your new favorite book is no doubt tucked in our shelves, but how do you become acquainted? You can always ask a Librarian (we love it when you do that)! Or, how about checking out one of our Librarian curated online booklists?

Our lists are organized by grade, reading level and topic, and integrated into our online catalog. You can see if your book is on the shelves now, or place a hold for later! Whether you’re a preschooler who loves dinosaurs, a 4th grade fan of mythology , or an 8th grader looking for something spooky, our lists have got your covered!

Don’t leave after storytime, Stay and Play!

Posted by jillt on

15275638_217868731983484_3371881551670280192_nSing, talk, read, write, PLAY! Did you know that playing is not only fun, it’s also one of the fundamental ways to prepare your child to be a reader? It’s true! Playing helps children develop language skills, and gives them opportunities to put their thoughts into words. Additionally, when children pretend, they exercise symbolic thinking–a block isn’t just a block, it can be a phone, a car or a house! Reading requires this same kind of symbolic thinking. Letters come together to create words, which represent real things and ideas. Pretty abstract stuff, but children who’ve logged lots of hours of playtime will be well equipped to take on this challenge. In short, play now to read later!

Now after every Baby Time and Family Storytime, we are offering 30 minutes of Stay and Play! The Friends of the San Rafael Public Library generously provided us with funds to purchase a variety of wonderful toys. We’re talking blocks, balls, musical instruments, toys that engage the senses, and toys for imaginative and dramatic play– all the good stuff! Children and their caregivers can stick around, socialize and play!

Storytimes and Stay and Play:

Tuesdays
Baby Time from 10:30-11
Stay and Play from 11-11:30

Wednesdays
Family Storytime from 10:30-11
Stay and Play from 11-11:30

Thursdays
Family Storytime from 10:30-11
Stay and Play from 11-11:30

We need your opinion about library facilities in San Rafael!

Posted by sarah on

Update: Surveys are now closed. Thank you to the 1,000+ of you who participated!

We need your opinion about library facilities in San Rafael!

In June, over 69% of San Rafael voters supported Measure D to maintain the library’s open hours and keep books on the shelves. Thanks to this support, the San Rafael Public Library is able to continue serving our community with top-notch library services and to look ahead to the future.

The City of San Rafael is now considering options for the future of our library facilities. Since the Downtown San Rafael Library was first constructed in 1908, the city’s population has grown more than tenfold. Our 100-year-old Downtown building no longer meets the community’s needs for space, technology, and services. The Pickleweed Branch Library also needs to improve its space to meet our community’s needs.

We are now seeking community input to help us understand our residents’ needs and help guide future decisions about the existing locations and potential new locations for our libraries. Deep and broad community input will help the San Rafael Public Library understand and meet our community’s current and future library needs. Postcard mailers with survey information will arrive soon in every residential mailbox in San Rafael.

Surveys can be filled out in English or Spanish in paper format (copies available at both the Downtown and Pickleweed Libraries) or online:
