3D Printing Policy

3D printing: the process of making a physical object from a digital model
3D printer: a 3D printer uses melted plastic or other materials to produce objects designed as a digital model

In support of our mission to engage, empower, and enrich our community through innovation, imagination, and inspiration, the San Rafael Public Library will offer community access to 3D printers—one each at the Downtown Library and the Pickleweed Library. This policy establishes under what circumstances the 3D printers will be used.

Public Access:
The goal of this program is to provide access to a 3D printer to all library users. The library staff will determine how and when the public will have access to the 3D printers. Currently, the public can expect to have access to the 3D printers through special programs in the libraries and library outreach programs. As of 9/10/2021, 3D printing is available by appointment only.

    1. Anyone is welcome to use or send files to be printed on the 3D printers.
    2. The Library’s 3D printers may be used only for lawful purposes. It is not permitted to use the 3D printers to create material that is:
      1. Prohibited by local, state, or Federal law
      2. Prohibited by the terms of use of the 3D printer manufacturer(s)
      3. Unsafe, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others
      4. Obscene, harmful, or otherwise inappropriate for the Library environment
      5. In violation of another’s intellectual property rights (e.g. the printers cannot be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection).
    3. The Library staff reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request.
    4. 3D printing at the Library is currently free. This is subject to change in the future.
    5. Items printed from the Library’s 3D printers must be picked up within 7 days of printing by the person who requested the print or a pre-arranged designee.
    6. Only designated Library staff and volunteers will have hands-on access to the 3D printers.
    7. The library reserves the right to set time limits or a queue as needed and as demand and the technology changes.
    8. The Library is not liable for any malfunctions or misprints.
