About the Friends of the San Rafael Public Library

More than 400 individuals and families help support the library each year through their membership in Friends of the San Rafael Public Libraries. An active group of Friends also participates in fundraising, advocacy, and volunteering. Volunteers organize and staff book sales, research rare books, and sort book donations. The Friends contribute to the library through their financial support of the Summer Reading Program, art lectures, and many other programs for kids, teens, and adults. They have purchased books, equipment, and much more over their devoted years of support. They support the downtown library as well as the Pickleweed and Northgate Mall branches.

The Friends main fundraising activity is selling donated books at:

Book lovers of all ages are invited to visit our bookstore in the heart of downtown San Rafael. Friends Books offers a full range of new and gently-used books, beautifully organized and displayed for your browsing and shopping pleasure. Enter through a rare downtown garden into the sunny and friendly shop, just around the corner from Fourth Street and next door to the parking garage on C Street and 5th Avenue.

The Friends also have large, themed sales at the library or at other locations throughout the year.

Donations

Currently, the Friends are not accepting donations due to reorganizing the Bookstore and Annex space until further notice. For future donations, please call the Bookstore at (415) 453-1443.

The Friends accept donations of up to 3 boxes or bags at the annex trailer at the Downtown library drive-through (1100 E St) on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings between 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. If you have 4 or more boxes or bags or have exceptional or rare books, please call 415-457-3421 to make an appointment.

Please do not to leave items outside. Items left outside will be discarded.

Please do not donate: encyclopedias, vinyl records, cassette tapes, VCR tapes, textbooks, seminar or business items, outdated science or computer items, or any items in not-new condition – only like-new items are accepted.
