1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Reading together is the single most important way you can help prepare your child to read. Starting from birth, shared reading increases vocabulary and knowledge while helping children develop an interest in reading.

The San Rafael Public Library challenges you to share 1,000 books before your child starts kindergarten.

You can do it! That’s one book a night for three years, or three books a night for one year.

How it works:

1. Pick up one of our fun interactive logs at the Downtown, Pickleweed, or Northgate Mall libraries.
2. Share books with your child! For every book you read, mark off a dot on the log.
   • Each sheet represents 100 books read.
   • You can read the same book more than once.
3. Once you’re done, come pick up a new log at the Downtown, Pickleweed or Northgate libraries.

Tips:

• Be flexible. Read even if your child is engaged in other toys.
• Read the same book over and over. Repetition helps children gain important literacy skills.
• Point and talk about pictures in your books and ask questions along the way.
• Keep books throughout your house to offer many reading opportunities during the day.

Leer juntos es la manera más importante en la que puede ayudar a su hijo para leer. Comenzando desde el nacimiento, la lectura acompañada aumenta el vocabulario y el conocimiento mientras ayuda a los niños a desarrollar el interés por la lectura. 

La Biblioteca Pública de San Rafael le invita a leer con su hijo 1,000 libros antes de que comience el kindergarten. 

¡Puede hacerlo! Puede leer un libro por noche durante tres años, o tres libros por noche durante un año. 

Cómo funciona: 

1. Recoja un divertido registro interactivo en las Bibliotecas del Centro de San Rafael, Pickleweed o Northgate Mall. 
2. ¡Comparta libros con su hijo! Por cada libro que lea, marque los puntos en el registro. 
   • Cada página representa 100 libros leídos. 
   • Puede leer el mismo libro más de una vez. 
3. Se puede recoger un nuevo registro en las Bibliotecas del Centro de San Rafael, Pickleweed o Northgate Mall. 

Consejos: 

• Sea flexible. Léale a su hijo, aunque él esté distraído con sus juguetes. 
• Lea el mismo libro una y otra vez. La repetición ayuda a los niños a adquirir habilidades de alfabetización. 
• Señálele y háblele acerca de las imágenes en los libros y hágale preguntas en el camino. 
• Durante el día, mantenga libros en diferentes partes de su casa para ofrecer varias oportunidades de lectura.
