Frank Stella: A Retrospective

FAMSF Docent speaker: Mina Shea

Frank Stella burst onto the art scene in 1959 at the age of 23, with his now-legendary series of black paintings.  Over the years his abstract compositions have become increasingly complex and dynamic, moving out from the walls into the third dimension, expanding the very definition of painting.  The de Young is the only West Coast venue for this retrospective covering six decades of Stella’s work, including paintings, wall mounted reliefs and sculpture.  Don’t miss this opportunity to delve into the work of one of the most important living American artists.

At the de Young, November 5, 2016 – February 26, 2017

Painting above:  Lac Laronge III, 1969.  Acrylic on canvas. 108 x 162 in.
