No commentsIn this presentation, you will learn why lawns are not eco-friendly, watch a short video that shows the best method to easily eliminate one, and discover how to decide the best use for the space. We will discuss the latest in walkable green plants, plus a host of other possibilities that will broaden your definition of “lawn alternative” as we answer these questions: Why replace your lawn? Three methods for lawn removal. What do you put where your lawn was?
Speaker: Marie Narlock has been a UC Marin Master Gardener since 2004. She studied landscape design through the UC Berkeley Extension and Merritt College and completed sustainable landscape classes at Sonoma State University. She writes articles for the Marin IJ and is co-founder and co-editor of the Leaflet, the Marin Master Gardener e-newsletter. Marie has participated in many MMG projects over the years, including the Marin County Fair demonstration gardens. Marie advocates using native plants in the garden both for their beauty and to help maintain Marin’s biodiversity.

This is the first major exhibition dedicated to the artistic exchange between French Impressionists Édouard Manet (1832–1883) and Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). Manet was the era’s great pioneer of modern painting, and Morisot, the only woman to exhibit under her own name in the original Impressionist group. Unfolding over a period of 15 years (1868–1883), this exhibition traces the evolution of a friendship between two groundbreaking artists. The story of their relationship has often been told through Manet’s early portraits of Morisot, with Morisot’s own work treated as an offshoot of Manet’s. Recent scholarship reveals that, by the final years of his life, Manet increasingly followed Morisot’s example — her choice of subjects and colors, and even her rapid, fluttering brushstrokes. Rich in new research, the exhibition recasts this celebrated artistic friendship — and, by extension, the story of modern art — in a fresh light. Manet and Morisot

No commentsJoin us for a sneak preview excerpt of Traces of Home, Bay Area filmmaker Colette Ghunim’s new documentary in which she embarks on journeys with her parents to find the ancestral houses they were forced to flee as children in Mexico and Palestine. What begins as a desire to connect to Colette’s cultural origins reveals an internal quest to heal her disconnect with her parents, and, ultimately, with herself.
Q&A with the filmmaker will follow the screening.

Local historian, Marcie Miller, of the Marin History Museum, will present a slide show of selected “Points of Interest” of downtown San Rafael. Many of these are historic homes, businesses, and buildings, that connect the city to its past. Marcie is known for her historic walking tours and is an enthusiastic storyteller. She’ll share stories, some true, some not and some just scandalous. If not for concerted efforts to preserve San Rafael’s older structures, the city would not be what it is today.
