Creating a Haven for Wildlife
Thousands of acres of habitat are lost to development and other human activity in the US every year. We can offset some of this loss by designing our gardens to attract and sustain native wildlife. By choosing the right plants and adding the right features, we can invite an array of birds, hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, beneficial insects and other animals to our gardens. Find out how to provide the essential ingredients for a habitat haven: food, water, cover and nesting space.
Betsy McGee has been a Marin Master Gardener since 2008. She served on the Sustainable Landscape Practices committee and has been an active participant in the residential Bay-Friendly Garden Walks program for many years. Betsy oversees community composting as one of the garden coordinators for the Larkspur Community Garden. A few years ago she re-landscaped her own garden from a “lawn-centric” design to one that is water-wise and provides habitat for wildlife; her garden was one of the featured Marin gardens on the Bay-Friendly Gardening Tour in 2012.
