Betsy Graziani Fasbinder
Filling Her Shoes, a Memoir of an Inherited Family, 2017.

Betsy Graziani Fasbinder, Christie Nelson, and Amy Peele have been together for seventeen years and continue to support and cheer one another on in their personal and professional lives. They call themselves The Bellas.

Betsy Graziani Fasbinder became a second mother to her first son when she married his widowed father. In her award-winning memoir, Filling Her Shoes: A Memoir of an Inherited Family, she reveals her conventional family that formed in an unconventional way, where love and loss are not opposites, but companions in life. The memoir has been honored with a Pinnacle Book Award, a Booklist Starred Review, an IPPY Award Gold Medal, and an Independent Press Award. Betsy is also the author of the award-winning novel, Fire & Water and has been a licensed psychotherapist in California since 1992 where she lives with her husband and their old blind doodle dog, her most faithful, if apathetic, writing companion, Edgar Alan Paw.
Betsy will give away a free audio version of Fire and Water.

Christie Nelson is a third generation San Franciscan, a longtime Marin resident, and author of the novels Woodacre, Dreaming Mill Valley and the newly published historical novel, Beautiful Illusion, Treasure Island, 1939, the story of the Golden Gate International Exposition. It has been described as “the next best thing to a time machine, a sparkling visit to Treasure Island’s fabulous world’s fair” by Anne Schnoebelen, Historian and VP of the Treasure Island Museum. The novel has been garnering “2018 Must-Read” accolades from publications including Buzzfeed and Parade Magazine.  She and her husband live in the 1880 brewmesiter’s house of the former San Rafael Brewery.

Amy S. Peele, RN, enjoyed a 35 year career in transplantation and retired from UCSF in 2014. Her recently published, debut novel, CUT: a Medical Murder Mystery, has received several awards including winning in the 2017 Independent Press Awards.
CUT reflects her knowledge of and passion for organ donation and transplant issues in a suspenseful, yet humorous story, set in the Bay Area. It has been referred to as a page turner, and a mystery with a mission and a side of humor.
Amy loves comedy and improv and graduated from Chicago’s famed Second City Players Workshop in 1985. In addition to killing people in her mysteries and using their organs for transplant, she enjoys yoga and meditation.
Amy will give away a copy of CUT.

Does My Voice Count? Voter Rights and Voter Suppression – 50 Years Later…What’s Changed?

Posted by bonnie on

In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was enacted marking the beginning of the end of voter suppression and disenfranchisement of blacks and people of color in the U.S.

Soon afterwards the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and Southern Christian Leadership Council issued a call to students to come to Mississippi to help register black voters during the 1965 Christmas vacation. It was called Mississippi Freedom Christmas.

Jim Lemkin, a volunteer photographer for SNCC, traveled the rural roads of Tylertown, Mississippi with a group of northern college students getting the word out that voter suppression was now illegal. Against a backdrop of southern resentment and hostility, students went door to door informing black residents of Wallthall County that they could now register to vote (many for the first time in their lives) and taking them to a Federal registrar to complete the voter registration process.

This slide presentation and discussion follows the work of a handful of students moved by compassion and the call to action for social justice.  We will also explore the consequences of the repeal of a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in 2013 that opened the doors to voter suppression once again.

Jim Lemkin, ND is a naturopathic doctor, photographer, documentary filmmaker and teacher. He has produced films that have appeared on PBS and elsewhere.
