What’s Apple Pay? We’ll review the different functions in this confusing topic.Additionally, Apple has provided us with safe alternatives to using our credit cards and
cash in public. Learn how to use the Wallet app to store your credit card information safely in your iPhone/iPad so making purchases doesn’t expose this sensitive information when you’re shopping in a store or are at a restaurant. Learn how the Wallet app can also store additional information like tickets, Covid vaccine records and more for easy retrieval when you’re in public.

Safari isn’t just for browsing and reading useful information. It can also be a safe way to shop online when you know how to store your sensitive information properly. This browser won’t prevent you from becoming a shopaholic or overspending, but it can keep your information safe if you know how to use it properly. The rest is up to you.

LEARNING WHILE ENJOYING THE REST OF SUMMER The first half of summer we enjoyed a long vacation from classes, but now it’s time for us to get back to learning, whether to refresh what we already know or to learn something new

Apple has given us a way to customize our devices to suit our personal needs best with the Settings function. In this class we’ll review what some of these settings are and show you how to make your own additional adjustments so each device works best for you.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 13th – ORGANIZING YOUR COMPUTER & MOBILE DEVICES 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM We’ve discussed organizing the proverbial “sock drawer” many times, and, based on the survey results, perhaps it’s messier than we had hoped. In this class we’ll review some of the ways to organize what’s on your computer for easy retrieval, and how to organize our iPhones and iPads to find what’s there more quickly. Unfortunately, this is work only you can do; there’s no magic wand that will instantly make it perfect.

Again, based on the survey results, organizing all the photos we have is top of mind as well. So, in this class we’ll review how to create folders and albums so all your photos are well organized and easily retrievable, and how to use the “Places” and “Favorites” functions for other ways of finding specific photos more easily. We’ll also review how to easily share your photos with friends and family.

When you learn how to use this app to keep yourself well-organized when planning a trip, storing and retrieving important information, preparing questions for a doctor’s appointment, and much, much more, you’ll quickly see why this is my favorite app.

OCTOBER CLASSES
With all the software upgrades that we had last month, there’s no loss of new topics for me to teach and you to learn. And, as we become more familiar with the changes, there will always be something else new on the list of questions that you’ll have.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1st – MAC SEQUIOA OPERATING SYSTEM UPGRADE 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Along with the iPhone and iPad upgrade that we just had, we also have an OS upgrade for our Mac computers. In this class we’ll review the highlights and go over how the changes have affected our Apple software and the computer’s functionality. In the Invitation to Register that you’ll receive the Thursday before class you’ll find a list of the computers that will take the update.

This newest feature from Apple gives us the ability to do many things more efficiently using Apple’s equivalent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that’s been offered by third party apps. As it’s a new function, we’ll give it a test drive around the block fully aware that it will improve with time and use.

Because iCloud is such an integral part of how all our various Apple devices stay up to date, let’s have a refresher class on this topic. Find My is an invaluable function that helps us locate our Apple devices, and even some of our friends and family when everyone is using this function together

Files” is an amazing function that allows us to use our mobile devices to see documents that are on our computer even if the computer isn’t on the same continent as we are!
“Keychain” is a function that enables us to store our passwords in Safari so we can automatically log onto sites without having to remember or retrieve them from elsewhere. And, once a password is saved on Keychain, any other devices that are on the same iCloud account will be able to use them as well.

GETTING READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS
The gift giving season is fast approaching and what could be a better gift than something you created yourself.
This pre-holiday season’s classes will give you the tools and resources to design personalized gifts from your photos, make your own holiday cards to share, and even give you ideas for gifts to give or hope to receive yourself.
And, if you’re wondering what happened to our proposed class on Apple Intelligence, it’s been put on the back burner. Why? Because as of the middle of October no release date for it has been announced, and what we do know it that when it is released it will be put out in stages with some of the most anticipated features not coming until next year. Let’s hold out collective breath and hope we don’t turn blue waiting for it.
Being creative in the signature that we put on our emails is a special way to personalize our messages. In this class we’ll review how to do this.
Apple’s FreeForm app also gives us a way to incorporate multiple photos along with a personal message and send it out via email and text. Perfect for travel postcards and holiday messages!

Based on requests from students, we’re going to try something new with this class; we’ll crowd share ideas for what people would like to give and/or receive as holiday gifts.
Some may be inexpensive but useful as stocking-stuffer type gifts while others may be products that we definitely have to be on Santa’s “Nice” list to receive. But, if we don’t ask we may never receive, so prepare your list in advance and we’ll see what happens…

Over the years many of you have requested classes on the Apple Watch, and I’ve taught it a few times but with limited success. Not enough people in our student body have one for me to justify the effort of building classes just on this product.
With that said, and the demand pressing, an idea was floated from several students about how to conduct this class; students who are Apple Watch users would share their ideas about how they use their Apple Watch to get the most benefit from this amazing technology. This will be a perfect way for each of us to learn from others.
But it requires your active participation for this class to be a success. No lurking in the Balcony section in the hopes of passively learning something while you’re on your treadmill or making dinner.
And, if you don’t have an Apple Watch, this class may inspire you to put it on your holiday wish list.

In anticipation of this class, I suggest that your do an on-line search of your name, phone
number or address. I assure you the amount of information that’s available for anyone to
glean is astonishing, and frightening.

In the latest operating system (OS) update, Apple, in their infinite wisdom, did a major
overhaul and redesign of how this app functions. It’s been confusing for many, and
requires patience to make it work as efficiently as the older version did. So, let’s review
how to maximize this new design and take the frustration out of the experience.TUESDAY,

With the latest OS upgrade, we were given an opportunity to be more creative with how
our mobile devices look, and even function. And while some of us (myself included)
don’t take easily to these kinds of changes, some of them are, in fact, kind of nifty, and
even helpful. Being able to lock some 3rd party apps and organize the Control Center
differently than in the past come to mind. With that said, let’s review what’s available
and how to implement them.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18th – THE MAPS APP

With each OS upgrade Apple’s Maps apps gets smarter, more efficient, and easier to use.
It also gives us interesting ways to plan trips, whether they’re short to do errands or long
like a road trip. While we’re housebound and coping with winter weather (unless you’ve
migrated to a more pleasant climate), let’s learn about how to use this app more
effectively.

As always, there are clever ways to do this and that on our Apple devices. The topic of
keyboard shortcuts immediately comes to mind. Other handy tips make using our devices
more efficient and effective. We’ll review a list of these and have a lively discussion to
go with it

Instructor Beryn Hammil will email you a welcome packet that includes detailed instructions on how to participate in the live Zoom meeting, stream from YouTube, or receive recap videos. You must register in advance on Zoom each week for each class you want to attend. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing links for joining the meeting 15 minutes before class.

These class topics were put together based on input from students, and while some of these topics have been taught recently, there’s always something new to learn in each. The content of each topic description will be adhered to, but discussion is not limited to just what’s presented in this schedule as one thing often leads to another.
“Doors” for class will open 15 minutes prior to that class starting and we will start on time. When the class capacity of 100 participants is reached in the live Zoom room, those who get “locked out” will be able to view the class by live streaming it on YouTube. This is called the “Balcony Section.” Those who are registered to participate by half past the hour prior to class starting will receive an email with the link to the live stream. It will be sent out within 15 minutes of the class starting. In this class we’ll review how many of Apple’s native apps interact with each other to make our devices even more robust and user friendly, and learn how to maximize them.
