First Wednesday Art Talk – Faith Ringgold: American People

Posted by bonnie on

Throughout her long career, artist Faith Ringgold has drawn from personal and collective histories to document both her life and the struggle for justice and equity. Faith Ringgold: American People brings together fifty years of groundbreaking work, and is the most comprehensive exhibition of her art to date. From painting to experimental story quilts, this talk will show how Ringgold’s artistic style evolved to bear witness to the complexity of the American experience. Long overdue, this retrospective provides a timely opportunity to engage with the art of an American icon.

This exhibition is at the De Young 8/1/2022 – 11/27/2022.

First Wednesday Art Talk – Alice Neel: People Come First

Posted by bonnie on

Alice Neel: People Come First is the first comprehensive West Coast museum survey of the work of American artist Alice Neel (1900–1984). This ambitious retrospective, featuring paintings, drawings, watercolors, and film, positions Neel as one of the century’s most radical painters, a champion of social justice whose longstanding commitment to humanist principles inspired her life as well as her art.

Neel spent most of her life living and working in New York City, and her work testifies to the diversity, resilience, and passion of the people she encountered there. The exhibition includes portraits of Neel’s neighbors in Spanish Harlem, political leaders, queer cultural figures, activists, mothers, and a diverse representation of nude figures, including visibly pregnant women, all of whom embody a candor and irreverence without precedent in the history of Western art. Together these works illuminate Neel’s uncompromising humanism, which still resonates with the social and cultural politics of our time.

First Wednesday Art Talk – Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy

Posted by bonnie on

Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy celebrates the extraordinary designs of Guo Pei—hailed as China’s first couturier—and the exhibition at the Legion of Honor includes more than 80 works from the past two decades highlighting her most important collections shown on Beijing and Paris runways. Through exquisite craftsmanship, lavish embroidery, and unconventional dressmaking techniques, Guo Pei creates a fantasy that fuses the influences of China’s imperial past, decorative arts, European architecture, and the botanical world. Through her extraordinary fashions, the exhibition reveals the trajectory of Guo Pei’s career as remarkable yet emblematic of China’s emergence as a leader in the fashion world in the early twenty-first century.

First Wednesday Art Talk – Let’s Talk Tabletop: The California Ceramic Tradition

Posted by bonnie on

Independent docent speaker, Avril Angevine, will be presenting a talk on California Ceramics, including the work of Sausalito artist Edith Heath, coinciding with the Edith Heath exhibition at the Oakland Museum from January 29, 2022 through October 30, 2022.

Let’s Talk Tabletop: The California Ceramic Tradition

Pottery has been a part of human culture for some 50,000 years—archeological digs from around the world–and in your own backyard—routinely turn up intriguing shards. California’s ample deposits of clay and talc insured a strong pottery tradition here, and California potters have played a leading role in the development of this humble and beautiful craft. Learn about some of the state’s most interesting clay crafters, from studios in Berkeley, on Catalina Island, in Southern California—familiar names like Arequipa, California Faience, Bauer, Metlox, and fascinating individuals like Marguerite Wildenhain, Jade Snow Wong, and Edith Heath.

First Wednesday Art Talk – California Pop Art

Posted by bonnie on

California artists may follow styles that originate in Europe or New York, but they put their own stamp on them—sometimes a bit more irreverent, sometimes more down to earth, but usually full of California color and verve. In the 1960s, local artists responded to the arrival of Pop Art—the flip and hip answer to the Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s—with California panache.
Learn about a few of our Pop stars—Ed Ruscha, Wayne Thiebaud, Joan Brown, Roger Kuntz, and Robert Colescott—in this talk.

Independent Docent Speaker:  Avril Angevine
The library does not record any of the art talks but you can visit Avril’s website to access to many of her talks there.

This talk coincides with SFMOMA’s exhibition on Joan Brown coming late November.

First Wednesday Art Talk – Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharoahs

Posted by bonnie on

Ramses II, known as Ramses the Great, was the most celebrated and powerful pharaoh of the New Kingdom, which was Egypt’s golden age. Believed to be a living god, Ramses ruled for 67 years, erecting enormous temples, obelisks, and statues while also expanding Egypt’s empire. Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharoahs features one of the greatest collection of Egyptian artifacts ever to travel to the United States. This talk will explore Ramses’ life and discuss the marvelous treasures in this exhibition, from the pharaoh’s colossal royal sculpture to mummies and exquisite Egyptian jewelry.
Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharoahs will be at the De Young 8/20/2022 – 2/12/2023.

First Wednesday Art Talk – Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art

Posted by bonnie on

Bats, gourds, peaches, ribbons, and monkeys on horses.

These images, and many others, are frequently and artistically depicted in Chinese art. But what do they mean? Using selected objects from the fabulous collections at the Asian Art Museum discover some of the fascinating and fun meanings and messages hidden in Chinese art.

As the Chinese language is an exquisite conduit for rebuses (visual puns) and symbolism, motifs that appear in Chinese art often represent wishes for good fortune and auspicious messages. Join us as we decipher hidden meanings of prosperity, health, and happiness found in traditional Chinese art.

Presented by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco Community Speakers Program.

Docent Speaker: Debbie Ottman

Cancelled–All Things Apple! with Beryn Hammil

Posted by bonnie on

If you are new to All Things Apple! and would like to get on the contact list for classes, please contact Librarian, Bonnie Groshong at: bonnie.groshong@cityofsanrafael.org

Instructor, Beryn Hammil, will then email you a welcome packet that includes instructions for how to participate in the Zoom meeting. You must register in advance on Zoom each week for each class you want to attend. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing links to joining the meeting.

Class topics will be divided into Part 1 at 2pm and Part 2 at 4pm. You’re welcome to participate in any and all classes, and for some topics you’re encouraged to participate in both parts to maximize the learning experience of that subject.

Each topic will cover information for the Mac computer, iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

These class topics were put together based on input from students, and while some of these topics have been taught recently, there’s always something new to learn in each. The content of each topic description will be adhered to, but discussion is not limited to just what’s presented in this schedule as one thing often leads to another.

Doors for each class will open 15 minutes prior to that class starting and we will start on time. When the class capacity of 100 participants is reached in the live Zoom room, those who get “locked out” will be able to view the class by live streaming it on YouTube. This is called the “Balcony Section.” Those who are registered to participate by half past the hour prior to class starting will receive an email with the link to the live stream. It will be sent out within 15 minutes of the class starting. If you’re viewing the class from the balcony you will not be able to raise your hand to ask questions but can nonetheless learn something new.

At the end of each class participants can stay for a Q&A session about that or any other topic. Because many people leave at the formal end of class, those who are watching the class from the balcony section will be able to join the live after-class Q&A to have their questions answered. Simply go back to the original link you received to the join the Zoom class and use that to get in.

A recap video of each class will be available so you can review material on YouTube, and you can build your own library of them, but you must participate in that class to receive access to it. Instructions for how to do this are given in the orientation email you received with your welcome packet as well as in the email for the live stream YouTube link sent out before each class starts.

Pre-registration is a requisite for each class, even if there are two on the same day. Invitations to register are sent out each THURSDAY morning for the following week’s classes, and you must register for each class separately.

The time shown for all classes is Pacific Time; please adjust accordingly for where you are.

If you know in advance that you have a specific question, please email it to me no later than 4:00 PM (PDT) the day before the class so I can prepare the answer.
