Cinco de Mayo with Angela Cervantes

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a program by Mexican-American writer, Angela Cervantes, author of Coco and many other books for young readers. Angela will share the story of how she became a writer and will follow her talk with a Q&A session to allow young readers and aspiring writers the opportunity to ask questions!

Open to 3^rd-7^th graders. To participate via Zoom, register in advance. You’ll be sent a link for the event and a password.

Cascada de Flores via Zoom

Join us via Zoom for a bilingual, participatory and original story told with music, dance and you!

WHEN: Wednesday, April 29 at 10:30am

WHO:  For children birth-12 years, but the entire family is invited to join in!

HOW:  Online via Zoom: Please register in advance. You will be sent an email with a password to enter the event at the specified time.

ZOOM Instructions

Our online programs use the Zoom software program. If you have not already used Zoom, you can either create a free account (zoom.com) or not, but you will need to complete an approximately minute long software download for your computer, phone or tablet. We recommend having this done well before the class start so that you can focus on the fun!

To login to our event, follow the provided link and then;

1.  ‘Join Audio Conference by Computer’ –(Green button)
2. Once in the event, you can choose to turn on your video (recommended!) and audio (recommended!) in order to participate. As moderators, we will selectively mute your audio in order to maintain focus on the presenter.
3. There is a button in the top right to toggle between ‘Speaker View’, which gives the focus to the presenter and ‘Gallery View’, which shows the gallery of the audience (including you!)

Blues Poetry Workshop for Grades 4-7

To participate, register ahead of time to join us via Zoom. You will be sent an email with a password to enter the event at the specified time.

Social-distancing? Shelter-in-place? Sickness? It’s enough to make anyone feel down these days. Express your feelings, and transform your Coronavirus (or other) blues into Blues Poetry in a class with librarian and California Poets in the Schools teacher, Lea Aschkenas. In this class for 4^th through 7^th graders, Lea will give a brief historical background of Blues music and poetry, share sample poems (some written by past students), and lead participants in an exercise to produce at least one original blues poem. Send your poems to her after the class, and we’ll publish them on the San Rafael Public Library website!

The library may be closed, but we still want to share stories, songs, rhymes, and movement with you. We are excited to offer online storytimes during this time of social distancing. Enjoy storytimes by your favorite San Rafael Public Library staffers while we’re all sheltering in place.

Additionally, we have an Early Literacy YouTube playlist with tips and activities for your child, birth to 5 years of age.

We are moving our April Monday Night Book Club online via Zoom video conference facilitated by Librarian Pam Klein.

We will be discussing Katherine Anne Porter’s novella “Pale Horse, Pale Rider” which is about the relationship between a Denver newspaper woman, Miranda and a soldier, Adam, during the influenza epidemic of 1918. This compelling story follows the illness and delirium of Miranda, and is based in part on Porter’s own illness while working for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver.

This novella is included in a collection of 3 stories also titled Pale Horse, Pale Rider and is found online at the Open Library in audio and print formats:
