Group Visit Guidelines

A group visit is an excellent opportunity to learn about the library. Visits may include a storytime, tour of the library with an overview of its materials and services, instruction on finding books and information, or time to browse and check out items as a group.

How do I arrange a group visit?

In order to provide your group with good service and attention, we ask that groups of 5 or more request visits at least 2 weeks in advance. While we do our best to schedule groups as soon as possible, not all requests can be fulfilled. Availability is based on our existing calendar of events, open hours, and staff availability. To schedule a visit, call 415-485-3323 (Downtown), 415-485-3483 (Pickleweed), 415-890-5670 (Northgate), or email library@cityofsanrafael.org. Groups of children or students must be accompanied by an adequate number of responsible adults.

What if we are late or cannot make it as planned?

Visits to the library will be cancelled if your group is 30 or more minutes later to the pre-scheduled time. Groups which arrive late may not have their visit extended to compensate. Visits may be rescheduled one time if we are notified 48 hours in advance.

How do I get library cards for my group?

If your group is from either San Rafael City Schools or Miller Creek School District, most of your students already have library cards as part of our school library card program! To make sure all students can check out materials, we may ask for a list of student names and birthdays to make new cards or have account information readily accessible. We cannot guarantee that new cards will be ready by the time of your group’s visit.

For other groups, please have members or their caregivers fill out our online registration form with their information ahead of your visit. For teachers or other group leaders who wish to check out all items for your group on one card (for classroom or other use) we highly recommend applying for an Institutional Library Card.

Can I bring my group to regular storytimes or library programs?

Yes! Per our Child Safety Policy, all children aged 8 and younger must be accompanied by a responsible caregiver. Groups of children must be accompanied by an adequate number of responsible adults.

See you at the library!
