Teen Volunteers: Information

The Young Readers Project

Want to make a real difference, meet cool kids and other teens, and earn volunteer/service hours? Join The Young Readers Project—a teen-led program where teens help younger students become confident young readers!

We’re looking for volunteers ages 13+ to help out one weekend morning for just one hour. You’ll be paired one-on-one with elementary-age readers for fun 20-minute reading sessions where you’ll:

  • Read together
  • Listen to kids read aloud
  • Help sound out tricky words
  • Encourage confidence and a love of reading

You’ll work with up to three students each hour, giving each child attention and support as needed. Whether you’re looking to earn service hours, gain experience, or simply give back, this is a fun and simple way to make a lasting impact in our community. With every story read, you gain some experience working with others in our chill library setting and helps a child grow in a super inspiring way!

Requirements for volunteering:

  • Teens aged 13+
  • Must be able to commit to 1-2 hours per weekend
  • All library volunteers are required to complete Live Scan fingerprinting, in accordance with City of San Rafael policy, before beginning their volunteer service. Additional information and instructions will be provided upon completion of the application review process.

Teen Advisory Board

What is it?

San Rafael Public Library’s teen advisory board (TAB) is group of dynamic young patrons who collaborate with the library to ensure that the teen community are getting what they need and want from the library.

Who can join?

If you’re a creative, passionate, community-driven teen who wants to make a difference, then the TAB is perfect for you!

  • Must be 13-18 years old.
  • Must be able to commit to monthly meetings.
  • Must be willing to communicate (regularly!) by email.
  • Must enjoy working as part of a team.
  • Must have a love for the library and making it a better place for other teens.

Why should you join?

We need your ideas, creativity, and service! The TAB is the place where you can hone your leadership skills and put your ideas to work. Make your voice heard by sharing it with other teens and the library community! You’ll make new friends, earn service and volunteer hours, gain experience, and eat pizza. You will also help the library make big decisions, plan events, write reviews, and be an advocate.

TAB usually meets the 3rd Mondays of the month from 5:30pm-6:30pm. Participating in TAB counts as community service hours!
