FAMSF Docent, Kathryn Zupsic will present the work of renowned tattoo artist and California native Ed Hardy and how his art elevated the tattoo from its subculture status to an important visual art form.

After art school, Ed Hardy deviated from the path to professorship and became one of the most influential tattoo artists of the 20th century. His iconic style emerged from his childhood fascination with classic American tattooing, study of prints by artists like Rembrandt and Goya, and deep influence from Japan’s ukiyo-e era culture. Survey his life in art through an eclectic display of paintings, sketches, interactive digital displays, and much more. Ed Hardy: Deeper than Skin is on view now through October 6 at the de Young.

This exhibition is at the De Young through October 6.
