Dave Iverson Author Talk

Author Talk: Dave Iverson

When Dave Iverson was a 59-year-old broadcast journalist, he decided to do something he’d never imagined: he moved in with his 95-year-old mom. Winter Stars is the story of their ten-year caregiving journey, lasting until his mom’s passing at the age of 105. As America ages, more people are thinking about caring for an aging parent or spouse at home. But for those considering that choice, what lies ahead? Winter Stars helps illuminate the way forward by offering the intimate, unvarnished story of an elderly mom, an aging son, and life’s final journey.

Join the San Rafael Public Library for an author talk discussing Winter Stars at Falkirk Cultural Center on Tuesday, January 17. We encourage you to read Winter Stars before attending—if you need help getting a copy, feel free to call, email, or send us a chat.

About the author:

Dave Iverson is a writer, documentary film producer/director and retired broadcast journalist. When Dave was 59, he moved in to take care of his 95 year old mom. His memoir, Winter Stars: An Elderly Mother, an Aging Son and Life’s Final Journey, tells the story of the 10 year caregiving odyssey he shared with his mom until her passing at the age of 105.

Dave has produced and reported more than 20 documentary specials for PBS, including the Frontline film, “My Father, My Brother and Me” which explored his family’s battle with Parkinson’s disease, and Capturing Grace, which tells the story of what happened when a group of people with Parkinson’s disease joined forces with a legendary New York City dance company.

He was a radio and television reporter, producer and host for nearly 40 years, first at Wisconsin Public Broadcasting and then at San Francisco’s NPR affiliate KQED. His awards include a national Emmy, four regional Emmys and numerous film festival citations. He’s also a founding member of the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s Patient Council.

First Wednesday Art Talk – The Wild, Wild World of Surrealism

Posted by bonnie on

Join us in Council Chambers for our FIRST face-to-face Art Talk since March 2020!! *

In the early 20th century, a time of astonishing, rapid, and unsettling technological change, artists searched for styles that expressed the disruption of the age. They explored art’s limits and broke boundaries, setting in motion a process that continues today. One of the most fascinating approaches was Surrealism. In many ways a reaction to the chaos of the first World War, the Surrealists rejected rational, logical processes and embraced dream, fantasy, and chance as the sources of their art. In doing so, they produced some of the century’s most memorable images and objects, witty, brash, and slightly erotic.

This talk will not be hybrid, nor will it be recorded.

Independent Docent Speaker: Avril Angevine

First Wednesday Art Talks are provided by
Friends of the San Rafael Libraries.

* Location of this talk may change to online via Zoom, depending on Covid conditions. If via Zoom, a link will be provided here. Please check this page on the day of the event for any changes.

Posted by bonnie on

Woodblock printing made art accessible to the masses. Japanese art is known for the beauty and variety of its woodblock prints. The techniques and characteristics of woodblock prints have influenced other art forms, especially the Impressionists, and have evolved over the years. They served multiple purposes from advertising posters to printed books to promoting fashion icons. Take a journey to heighten appreciation of the beauty of woodblock prints and understand the elements which had such influence.

Asian Art Museum Docent: Jim Brown

Please register in advance or on the day and time of the event.
