If you are new to All Things Apple! and would like to get on the contact list and register for classes, please send an email to: bonnie.groshong@cityofsanrafael.org

Instructor Beryn Hammil will email you a welcome packet that includes detailed instructions on how to participate in the live Zoom meeting, stream from YouTube, or receive recap videos. You must register in advance on Zoom each week for each class you want to attend. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing links for joining the meeting 15 minutes before class.

Pre-registration is a requisite for each class. Invitations to register are sent out each THURSDAY morning for the following week’s classes, and you must register for each class separately.

____________________________________________

Each topic will cover information for the Mac computer, iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

These class topics were put together based on input from students, and while some of these topics have been taught recently, there’s always something new to learn in each. The content of each topic description will be adhered to, but discussion is not limited to just what’s presented in this schedule as one thing often leads to another.

Doors for class will open 15 minutes prior to that class starting and we will start on time. When the class capacity of 100 participants is reached in the live Zoom room, those who get “locked out” will be able to view the class by live streaming it on YouTube. This is called the “Balcony Section.” Those who are registered to participate by half past the hour prior to class starting will receive an email with the link to the live stream. It will be sent out within 15 minutes of the class starting. If you’re viewing the class from the balcony, you will not be able to raise your hand to ask questions but can nonetheless learn something new.

At the end of each class participants can stay for a Q&A session about that or any other topic. Because many people leave at the formal end of class, those who are watching the class from the balcony section will be able to join the live after-class Q&A to have their questions answered. Simply go back to the original link you received to the join the Zoom class and use that to get in.

A recap video of each class will be available so you can review material on YouTube, and you can build your own library of them, but you must participate in that class to receive access to it. Instructions for how to do this are given in the orientation email you received with your welcome packet as well as in the email for the live stream YouTube link sent out before each class starts.

The time shown for all classes is Pacific Time; please adjust accordingly for where you are.

IT’S ALL ABOUT TRAVEL AND USING YOUR DEVICES EFFECTIVELY!

People are traveling again! Yippee! With that in mind, classes this month will focus on effective functionality of our devices when we’re away from home.

But even if you’re not traveling and are just going to the grocery store, for a walk on a nearby trail, or relaxing at home, you might find some of the same technical challenges as if you were halfway around the world, so these classes will be beneficial for you too.

Using our new class format of greater student participation, your input is encouraged on each of these topics so we can all learn from your experience and wisdom.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 2ndTHE TELEPHONE WHEN WE TRAVEL
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Learn how to set up your iPhone to function cost effectively in another country when you need to make a call or go online. We’ll also touch on FaceTime and 3rd party apps so you can make free phone calls, and we’ll talk about 3rd party devices that can reduce the expense as well as keep you secure online. We’ll also review functions in the Clock and Calendar apps so you to put your travel schedule together to work properly for you there.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 9th – MAPS
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Learn how to use the Maps app to help you find your way wherever you are and how to set up and use Guides to retrieve saved information quickly. We’ll also touch on the Google Maps app.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 16th – LANGUAGE TRANSLATE & READING APPS
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Learn how Safari can translate foreign language websites into your language and how translation apps can let you communicate with people in their language. Remember when we had to lug books and magazines if we wanted to read while on a long flight? That’s a thing of the past now that we’re able to read books, save news and informative articles to read offline, and download magazines onto our devices with Safari, the Books app, the Kindle app and more.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 23rd – 3rd PARTY TRAVEL APPS
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

We’ll review some of the many 3rd party apps that are useful to plan your trip ahead of time; find interesting things to do, places to stay and dine, and make reservations.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 30th – TRAVEL RELATED TIPS & TRICKS + OPEN DISCUSSION / Q & A
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

There are so many little things that can enhance your experience on each device. I’ll run through a short list so you’ll learn how to be more efficient and feel more accomplished with your Apple devices.

If you have a trick or tip that you love and want to share, send it to me no later than 3:00 PM (Pacific time) the day before the class so I can demonstrate how to do it and we can all benefit from your knowledge.
The Q&A segment of this class will be determined by whatever you want to learn and discuss, so have your questions ready.
If you know in advance that you have a specific question, please email it to me no later than 3:00 PM (PDT) the day before the class so I can prepare the answer.
