Instructor Beryn Hammil will email you a welcome packet that includes detailed instructions on how to participate in the live Zoom meeting, stream from YouTube, or receive recap videos. You must register in advance on Zoom each week for each class you want to attend. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing links for joining the meeting 15 minutes before class.

Each topic will cover information for the Mac computer, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

These class topics were put together based on input from students, and while some of these topics have been taught recently, there’s always something new to learn in each. The content of each topic description will be adhered to, but discussion is not limited to just what’s presented in this schedule as one thing often leads to another.

Doors for class will open 15 minutes prior to that class starting and we will start on time. When the class capacity of 100 participants is reached in the live Zoom room, those who get “locked out” will be able to view the class by live streaming it on YouTube. This is called the “Balcony Section.” Those who are registered to participate by half past the hour prior to class starting will receive an email with the link to the live stream. It will be sent out within 15 minutes of the class starting. If you’re viewing the class from the balcony, you will not be able to raise your hand to ask questions but can learn something new nonetheless.

At the end of each class participants can stay for a Q&A session about that or any other topic. Because many people leave at the formal end of class, those who are watching the class from the balcony section will be able to join the live after-class Q&A to have their questions answered. Simply go back to the original link you received to the join the Zoom class and use that to get in.

A recap video of each class will be available so you can review material on YouTube, and you can build your own library of them, but you must participate in that class to receive access to it. Instructions for how to do this are given in the orientation email you received with your welcome packet as well as in the email for the live stream YouTube link sent out before each class starts.

Pre-registration is a requisite for each class. Invitations to register are sent out each THURSDAY morning for the following week’s class, and you must register for each class.

The time shown for all classes is Pacific Time; please adjust accordingly for where you are.

WE’RE GOING “BACK TO THE BASICS”

WITH OUR APPLE DEVICES!

Not knowing at what level of capability each participating student is functioning at, this month we’re all going “Back to the Basics” to learn, or even relearn, how our various Apple devices and Apple apps should be set up to give us the maximum benefit of their design and security.

Because my switching back and forth between the iPhone and iPad is not do-able during our Zoom class, whatever the discussion and demonstration is for the iPhone, it’s usually also applicable to the iPad too.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 3rdSETTING UP THE MAC COMPUTER, iPHONE & iPAD

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

The first step to using our devices effectively is to make sure they’re set up properly to function the way we want them to, including some of the “accessibility” functions that help personalize the devices for our individual needs. Because there’s never enough time to review and demonstrate everything on this topic, today we’ll review the list of Apple’s apps that are included in all our devices and where and how you can learn more about the functionality of each on your own.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 10th – iCLOUD SYNCING AND BACKING UP

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Next, we’ll review how to set up all our Apple devices to sync with each other so when we make a change or an addition to something in an Apple app on one device, that same change or addition will show up in all our other Apple devices. We’ll also review how to back-up the content of our devices on Time Machine and, if appropriate, to 3rd party back-up sites so all the information our devices contain is retrievable if it’s lost for whatever reason.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 17TH – HOW TO ORGANIZE OUR DEVICES

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Now that our devices are set up properly for our individual needs, and everything is synching and backed up, let’s review how to organize the content of our devices for easy retrieval. We’ll also review how to check the storage capacity in our devices and how to store older documents, photos, movies, etc., in an external device so valuable storage space is freed up for things we need to access more readily. Think of this as creating extra storage space in an attic or garage.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 23rd – WALLET APP & APPLE PAY

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

  • Learn how to use the Wallet app to make shopping easier and more secure, and how to store membership cards, reservations and tickets there too for easy retrieval later.
  • Learn what Apple Card and Apple Cash are.
  • Learn how to have your credit card information stored in Safari to make online shopping easier.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 31stPASSKEY, TIPS & TRICKS, Q&A and OPEN DISCUSSION

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

First, we’ll review PASSKEY, Apple’s new, tightened security system that replaces Passwords in your iCloud Keychain.

Next, we’ll review a few of many little things that can enhance your experience on each device. I’ll run through a short list so you’ll learn how to be even more efficient and feel more accomplished with your Apple devices.

Your burning questions will be addressed too, and there’s always time for a discussion about this or that.
